Down On the Farm

Our kindergarten classes study animals on the farm and go to the Dairy Farm.

First grade classes study what grows on farms, the types of farms, machinery on the farm,
and products that come from the farm.
We also go to the farm and pay close attention to animals, crops, and machinery.
Our farm visit is usually at the end of Sept. or at the beginning of Oct.,
so we can see farmers harvesting their crops.

We start out the unit by reading Barnyard Banter and singing "Old McDonald Had a Farm".
Each student has a worksheet of the story characters.
They color and cut out the characters for the story.
I have a large laminated red barn for pairs to share.
As we sing "Old McDonald" again, students find the
animal and put it in the barn.
Students then sequence the pictures of
the animals in the story for a retell.
This is a good review of kindergarten farm animals.
We also graph our favorite farm animal.

Click here for a mini book I made based on this book.
Click here for another mini book "Animals On the Farm" that I made.
Enjoy!

Sometimes I do a KWWL Chart before we start our unit.
We introduce the types of farming: Livestock, Crop, and Dairy

1. Livestock ~ Students learn the major livestock in Iowa are pigs and cows.
2. Crop ~ The two main crops in Iowa are corn and soybeans.
We have a Farm Bureau booklet that tells all the wonderful products made from soybeans.
Wow~we did not know so many things are made from soybeans and corn!!

3. Dairy ~ Dairy Farms are a major source of products for Iowa
We make homemade butter, of course, and sing the fun Butter Boogie below.

The Giving Farm
Hens give eggs.
Pigs give ham.
Cows give milk.
Strawberries give jam.
Bees give honey.
Goats give cheese.
Farms give food,
I'd like some, please!

By Vicki Witcher
To the Farm
Horses, donkeys, cows that moo,
Chickens, kittens, piglets, too,
Fish that swim down in the pond,
Ducklings quacking all day long.
All these animals you can see,
If you go to the farm with me.

All Around the Barnyard
All around the barnyard
The animals are fast asleep.
Sleeping cows and horses,
Sleeping pigs and sheep.

Here comes the cocky rooster
To sound his daily alarm.
"Cock-a-doodle-doo!
Wake up sleepy farm!"

Five Friendly Farmers
Five friendly farmers
Wake up with the sun,
For it is early morning
And the chores must be done.
The first friendly farmer
Goes to milk the cow.
The second friendly farmer
Thought he'd better plow.
The third friendly farmer
Feeds the hungry hens.
The fourth friendly farmer
Puts the piggies in their pens.
The fifth friendly farmer
Picks the ripe corn.
And waves to the neighbor
When he blows his horn.
When the work is finished
And the evening sky is red
Five tired farmers
Tumble into bed!

Making Butter Boogie
(Tune: "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star")
Author Unknown

Shake it up
Shake it down
Shake it, shake it all around.
Shake it high
Shake it low
Shake it, shake it to and fro.
Shake it over
Shake it under
Pretty soon, you'll have butter!

Farm Sounds
by John Saltsman
(Tune: Wheels on the Bus)

The cows in the barn go moo, moo, moo,
Moo, moo, moo, moo, moo, moo.
The cows in the barn go moo, moo, moo,
All around the farm.
Other verses:
... pigs in the pen go oink, oink, oink
... hens in the coop go cluck, cluck, cluck
... rooster on the fence goes cock-a-doodle-do
... ducks in the pond go quack, quack, quack
... lambs on the hill go baa, baa, baa
... bunnies in the hutch go (silently wiggle nose with finger)

We're Going to the Farm
Tune: The Farmer in the Dell

We're going to the farm.
We're going to the farm.
Fi-fo the ferry-o,
It's time to see the farm!

I hope we see a cow.
I hope we see a cow.
Ci-co the cerry-o,
I hope we see a cow!

I hope we see a lamb.
I hope we see a lamb.
Li-lo the lerry-o,
I hope we see a lamb!

I hope we see a horse.
I hope we see a horse.
Hi-ho the herry-o,
I hope we see a horse.!

I hope we see a pig.
I hope we see a pig.
Pi-po the perry-o,
I hope we see a pig!

I think it's time to go.
I think it's time to go.
Gi-go the gerry-o,
I think it's time to go!

Also, On the Farm
Eight Pigs
Two mother pigs lived in a pen
Each had four babies and that made 10
These 4 babies were black and white
These 4 babies were black as night
All 8 babies loved to play
And they rolled and rolled in the mud all day.

Pig
Behold the pig!
It's very big!
Its color pink
Is nice, I think!
Its tail's a beaut,
So curly cute!
And on the farm,
It oinks with charm!

Meish Goldish
The Higgy-Piggy
The Higgy-Piggy
You put your right hoof in;
You put your right hoof out;
You put your right hoof in and
you shake it all about.
You do the Higgy-Piggy,
And you turn yourself around,
That's what it's all about!
Oink!
Other Verses:
You put your left hoof in....
You put your right hamhock (hip) in...
You put your left hamhock in....
You put your snout in....
You put your curly tail in...

Seven Piglets
Seven piglets, pink and gray,
who could not keep from squealing,
chased each other all the way
from Wichita to Wheeling.
Under fences, over rails,
they raced with one another,
then turned around and twitched their tails,
and hurried home to Mother.

Retelling The Little Red Hen by Byron Barton
Characters: Red Hen, 3 chicks, Duck, Pig, & Cat
Each student had a 2 pocket folder. They decorated the front as the
title of the book, glued a barn on the inside (shape tablet), colored a farm
scene around the barn, and made their stick puppets. I drew each of the characters
on one page and ran it off on white construction paper.
The students colored each character and then used glitter glue,
yarn, and pipe cleaners to add decoration to the characters.
