Our last story in our Houghton Mifflin basal is "The Hat" from Days with Frog and Toad
First graders have so much fun reading about Frog and Toad adventures!

CHANGES

I haven't felt so funny
Since the day we left our eggs.
Some bumps are growing near my tail,
They really look like legs.

Well, legs are good for swimming
And flippers have their charms,
But what's this coming through my chest?
This time I'm getting arms.

I'm a funny sort of tadpole,
My tail is hardly there.
I used to gulp the water,
But now I'm breathing air.

It makes me feel like croaking
As I sit upon this log.
I'm not a tadpole any more -
I've turned into a frog!

Little Polliwog

Sung to "Itsy, Bitsy Spider"

The little polliwog wiggled from it's egg.
Dreaming of the day when it would grow some legs!
Swimming in the pond and hiding near the mud,
Oh, little polliwog, loves to munch on tasty bugs!

Now that little polliwog has grown into a frog,
Spends all the lazy day sunning in the bog,
Hopping to and fro, still hiding near the mud,
Still swimming in the pond and munching tasty bugs!

Five Little Speckled Frogs

Five little speckled frogs,
Sitting on a speckled log,
Eating the most delicious bugs,
Yum, yum.
One jumped into the pool,
Where it was nice and cool,
Then there were four little speckled frogs.

(Repeat, working your way down to one.)

One little speckled frog sitting,
Sitting on a speckled log,
Eating the most delicious bugs,
Yum, yum.
He jumped into the pool,
Where it was nice and cool,
There there were no little speckled frogs.

Five Little Tadpoles
Five little tadpoles swimming near the shore.
The first one said, "Let's swim some more."
The second one said, "Let's rest awhile."
The third one said, "Swimming makes me smile."
The fourth one said, "My legs are growing long."
The fifth one said, "I'm getting very strong."
Five little tadpoles will soon be frogs.
They'll jump from the water and sit on logs.

Bloop, Bloop

Bloop bloop went the little green frog one day,
Bloop bloop went the little green frog,
Bloop bloop went the little green frog one day,
And they all went bloop bloop blop.

But!
We all know frogs go,
Lahdeedahdeedah!
Lahdeedahdeedah!
We all know frogs go,
Lahdeedahdeedah!
They don't go bloop bloop blop.

Listen to the Frog

Listen to the frog,
Croaking on a log.
He croaks about this
And he croaks about that.
It seems very clear
That he needs to chat.
Ribbet, ribbet, ribbet.

Little Froggy

(to the tune of "I'm a Little Teapot")
See the little froggy
Swimming in the pool
The water's great-
It's nice and cool
When he gets all cleaned up
Out he'll hop
Squeaky clean
From bottom to top.
See the little froggy
On the lily pad
Trying to catch flies
She's getting sad.
When she catches one,
She'll gobble it up
Back in the water
She'll go kerplop!

The Polliwog

Oh, the Polliwog is woggling
In his pleasant native bog
With his beady eyes a-goggling
Through the underwater fog
And his busy tail a-joggling
And his eager head agog-
Just a happy little frogling
Who is bound to be a frog.

Arthur Gutterman

Polly - Wog

There once was a polly named Wog
Who wanted to change to a frog,
So he dropped off his tail
Grew legs without fail
And croaked all day on a log.

Five Frisky Frogs

Five little frisky frogs, hopping on the shore (hold up five fingers)
One hopped into the pond -SPLASH!! (jump out)
So then there were just four, four little frisky frogs (hold up four fingers)
Climbing up a tree, one fell into the grass, BOOM! (pretend to fall)
So then there were just three, three little frisky frogs (hold up three fingers)
Bathing in the dew, one caught a sneezy cold A-CHOO (sneeze)
So then there were just two, two little frisky frogs (hold up two fingers)
Sleeping in the sun, One slept the day away, SNORE! (pretend to sleep)
So then there was just one, one little frisky frog (hold up one finger)
Sitting on a stone, let's call his four friends back, Yoo-hoo, Yoo-hoo
So he won't be alone.

I used a green "Index Card" when we did these in the classroom.
The kids had a ball seeing how far they would go!
This of course was tied in with a math lesson on measurement.
