Insects All Around
Tune: "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star"

Ladybugs and butterflies,
Buzzing bees up in the sky.
Teeny, tiny little ants,
Crawling up and down the plants
Many insects can be found
In the sky and on the ground.

Insect Body Parts
(Tune: Heads, Shoulders, Knees and Toes)

Head, thorax, abdomen, abdomen
Head, thorax, abdomen, abdomen
Two antennae and six wiggly legs
Head, thorax, abdomen, abdomen

Insect Bodies
(Tune: If You're Happy and You Know It)
By Victoria Smith

Every insect's body has three parts.
Yes, every insect's body has three parts.
Every insect has a head,
A thorax and abdomen,
Every insect's body has three parts.
Every insect's body has six legs.
Yes, every insect's body has six legs.
They have three legs on each side
And they walk on them with pride.
Every insect's body has six legs.

EVERY INSECT
--Dorothy Aldis

Every insect (ant, fly, bee)
Is divided into three:
One head, one chest, one
stomach part.

Some have brains.
All have a heart.

Insects have no bones,
no noses.

But with feelers they can smell
Dinner half a mile away.
Can your nose do half as well?

Also you'd be in a fix
With all those legs to manage: six.

Metamorphosis
(Tune: Skip to My Lou)

I'm a tiny egg under a leaf
I'm a tiny egg under a leaf
I'm a tiny egg under a leaf
That's the first part of my metamorphosis.
I'm a hungry caterpillar eating up leaves
I'm a hungry caterpillar eating up leaves
I'm a hungry caterpillar eating up leaves
That's the second part of my metamorphosis.
I make a chrysalis and take a nap inside
I make a chrysalis and take a nap inside
I make a chrysalis and take a nap inside
That's the third part of my metamorphosis.
I wake up and emerge as a butterfly
I wake up and emerge as a butterfly
I wake up and emerge as a butterfly
That's the fourth part of my metamorphosis.

Incredible Insects!
We do a Foss insect unit in science. We will have 3 insects for our first graders to observe, study, and write about. Each student will have a vial on their desk with two Mealworms. We will also have a large class culture. We will have 3 plastic bag habitats for Milkweed Bug eggs. We will have Painted Lady larva. Each student will have a book for each of their insects to record information. We will be studying insects through the months of March, April, and May.

We will learn:
All insects have 6 legs.
Insects have 3 body parts~a head, a thorax, and an abdomen.
Most insects have antennae.
Insects molt.
Insects change. This change is called metamorphosis.
Some insects go through complete metamorphosis.
The stages of growth are egg, larva, pupa, and adult.
Some insects go through incomplete metamorphosis.
The stages of growth are egg, nymph, and adult.

Very "Creative" Insects!
