Mittens
Mittens for the snow time
When the world is white.
Mittens for my two hands.
Mittens left and right.
Mittens with a thumb place.
Mittens warm and snug.
Mittens make me feel like
A bug inside a rug!

Colorful Mittens
(tune: Six Little Ducks)
Colorful mittens
for me and you
Red ones, yellow ones,
blue ones too.
But the one pair of mittens
that rhymes with fellow,
They're my favorite mittens,
they're the color yellow!
Replace with other rhyming pairs such as:
bed/red
bean/green
sink/pink

Mittens
Stripes or dots or sparkling white,
Mittens in winter fit just right.
Wool and cotton, maybe leather-
Mittens warm us in cold weather.
In rainbow colors and darkest black,
Mittens fit in a pocket or in your pack.
Thumbs alone, fingers together,
We love mittens in cold, cold weather.
|

Mittens
"Thumbs in the thumb-place,
Fingers all together!"
This is the song
We sing in mitten-weather.
When it is cold,
It doesn't matter whether
Mittens are wool
or made of finest leather.
This is the song
We sing in mitten weather:
"Thumbs in the thumb place,
Fingers all together!"

Warm Mittens
I wiggle my left hand,
I wiggle my right,
inside of my mittens,
so warm and so tight.
I wiggle my pinkie.
I wiggle my thumb,
so when I make snowballs,
my hands don't get numb.
|

Mittens are warm,
Mittens are grand,
Mittens are like shoes
for my hands.

The Winter Pokey
to the tune of "The Hokey-Pokey"
You put your right mitten in,
You take your right mitten out.
You put your right mitten in,
And you shake it all about.
You do the winter pokey, [shiver]
And you turn yourself around.
That's what it's all about!
You put your left mitten in....
You put your right boot....
You put your left boot....
You put your long scarf in....
You put your warm cap in....
You put your snowsuit in....

The Mitten: for Jan Brett's The Mitten
(to the tune of "The Farmer in the Dell")
The mitten on the ground.
The mitten on the ground.
Heigh-ho! It's cold outside.
The mitten on the ground.
The (mole) snuggles in.
The (mole) snuggles in.
Heigh-ho! It's cold outside.
The (mole) snuggles in.
(After the last animal, all pretend to sneeze and fall out of the mitten.)

Here is another version for
Jan Brett's The Mitten:
The Mitten in the Snow
Tune: The Farmer in the Dell
The mitten in the snow
The mitten in the snow
Help us please
so we won't freeze
The mitten in the snow
A ________ squeezes in
A ________ squeezes in
Help us please
so we won't freeze
The mitten in the snow.

The Mitten
(tune: The Farmer in the Dell)
The mole is in the mitten.
The mole is in the mitten.
Mi-mo the merry-o,
The mole is in the mitten.
The rabbit is in the mitten.
The rabbit is in the mitten.
Ri-ro the rerry-o,
The rabbit is in the mitten.
* Continue to change animals and sounds to match
until you have done all the animals.
**This song was in the Phonemic Awareness Winter book.

THE MITTEN
by Eleanor Ripp
There was a mole who found a mitten,
Rabbit came, he too could fit in.
Prickly hedgehog needed space,
Owl came by and found his place.
Badger pushed; some room he took,
Fox squeezed in and found a nook.
Bear arrived and hardly fit,
But mouse was just too much...That's it!

We read The Mitten by Jan Brett and
The Mitten by Alvin Tresselt.
I made the Venn Diagram for a comparison of the two books.

Click on the picture for a view and right click to save.
We made mittens using Jan Brett's mitten pattern.
I copied it off onto 2 sheets of white construction paper for each student.
***Make sure you copy them so you have a right and left.
Students cut them out and glued just around the outside.
We have also punched holes around the outside and students
use white yarn to stitch them together.
Leave the top open, so the animals can be put inside.
Copy a pattern of the animal page for each student to color and cut out.
I had the students number the animals to help remember the order they get in the mitten.
Then have them do a retell of the story with a partner or in groups.
