Wonderful Winter!

The snow fell gently all the night.
It made a blanket soft and white.
It covered houses, flowers, and ground
But did not make a single sound.
Wintertime Poem

Icy fingers, icy toes,
Bright red cheeks and bright red nose.
Watch the snowflakes as they fall,
Try so hard to count them all.
Build a snowman way up high,
See if you can touch the sky.
Snowflakes, snowballs, angels, too,
In the snow, so white and new.
Slip and slide and skate so fast.
Wintertime is here at last!

~Mary Ryer ~

Snow

Snow makes whiteness where it falls,
The bushes look like popcorn balls,
And places where I always play,
Look like somewhere else today.

I Love Snow!
(Tune: Three Blind Mice)

I love snow, I love snow,
Soft white snow; soft, white snow,
It falls on the ground so soft and white,
Sometimes it falls all through the night,
Did you ever see such a beautiful sight
As soft white snow?

Snowflakes

Snowflakes, snowflakes
Falling everywhere
They stick to my nose
They stick to my hair
When one falls upon my hand
And I look carefully
I see that each one is unique
Just like you and me!

It is Snowing

It is snowing
It is snowing
All around
All around
Soft and quiet snowflakes
Soft and quiet snowflakes
Not a sound
Not a sound

Sing a Song of Winter

Sing a song of winter,
Frost is in the air.
Sing a song of winter,
Snowflakes everywhere.
Sing a song of winter,
Hear the sleighbells chime.
Can you think of anything
As nice as wintertime?

Snowflakes
Tune: Twinkle Twinkle

Snowflakes falling one by one.
Time to play and have some fun!
Build a snowman, snowballs too,
Come and see what you can do!

Winter Clothes

Under my hood I have a hat
And under that
My hair is flat.
Under my coat
My sweater's blue,
My sweater's red.
I'm wearing two.
My muffler muffles to my chin
And round my neck
And then tucks in.
My gloves were knitted
By my aunts.
I 've mittens too
And pants
And pants
And boots
And shoes
With socks inside.
The boots are rubber, red and wide.
And when I walk
I must not fall
Because I can't get up at all.
~Karla Kuskin
Snowflakes

I like snowflakes. Ask me why. Why?
Because they fall from the sky,
Because the seem to dance and fly,
Because they pile up so high,
Because they are so white and dry,
Because they melt in my hand,
Because they're quiet when they land,
Because, because, because, that's why,
I like snowflakes!

Snow Song

I like to walk
on fresh fallen snow
The kind that whispers
and speaks.
It sings a song
as I walk along
With crackles and
scrunches and squeaks.

When It Snows
Tune: She'll be Comin' Around The Mountain)
or
("If You're Happy & You Know It")

Oh, you shiver and you quiver when it snows.
Oh, you shiver and you quiver when it snows.
Your hands feel just like ice,
so you rub them once or twice.
YES, you shiver and you quiver when it snows.
BRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!
I'm a Little Snowflake

I'm A little snowflake,
You can see,
No other snowflake
looks like me!
Please pick me up
After I fall,
And roll me with my friends
To make a snowball!

Activities:
Snowflakes ~ Use coffee filters and fold in half and then into thirds to make a cone shape. Students cut small pieces out to make their snowflake design. If you want these to be sparkly, glue onto light blue construction paper and sprinkle with glitter.

Make snowflakes from tortillas. Fold as you would to make a snowflake. Have students cut out little pieces to make their snowflake. These can be fried and sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar or you can spread them with butter and sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar and bake. These are very good baked, too!

Click on the snowflake for a recipe.

Make snoman bookmarks with a large craft stick, white foam circle, small google eyes, orange foam, red and green felt, 2 small black buttons, and black pipe cleaner. Use a magic marker to make cheek circles and mouth.

Make a paper plate snowman using a small white paper plate, a large paper plate, black construction paper, orange bumpy chenille section (nose), buttons, 15 inch long ribbon(to attach plates together), and wrapping paper for mittens.

Read the book: Snowballs by Lois Ehlert ~ Students can make their own special snowmen by stapling three small paper plates together. Decorate with different materials: buttons, wiggle eyes, felt, different colors of scrap material, and other items to glue on to make theirs unique! You could also have this be a project they could do at home and bring back to school to display.

Sock Snowmen ~ Use a small sized girls' white sock and turn it inside out. Fill the bottom with 1/3 cup of rice or beans to help it stand up. Fill the rest of the way with polyfill stuffing. Fasten shut with a rubber band and fold the top down for a hat. Put a baby sock on top for a stocking cap. Tie cloth, felt strip, or ribbon around the neck for a scarf. Add a carrot nose, eyes and mouth.

Snowball Bingo ~ Use miniature marshmallows to play sight word bingo. Have one snack bag for playing and another bag for eating! Students could do this during center time.

Click on the picture below for a mini book I made. Enjoy!
